Plans restricted beyond papers: A review of Elisha's manifesto and a failed administration at Zik Hall's Health Ministry.

The office of the Health Minister as stipulated in Chapter 5, Section 28 of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall Constitution was given five strands of duties. In essence, the Health Minister is saddled with the responsibility of the healthy and hygienic well-being of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall and its residents, the Zikites.

It is with this aim, that Ajiboye Elisha, a former 300-level student from the Department of Biochemistry, and now a 200-level transfer student of Medicine and Surgery, decided to take up the responsibilities attached to the office of the Health Minister by contesting for the office. It is, however, important to evaluate the crop of plans that he pledged while contesting for the office. This review is imperative to evaluate the pledges and promises made by Elisha if he has kept up with them and how well he has done so.

Improvement and Provision of Health Services.

The first on the list of plans made by Elisha was to improve the health services in the hall by refurbishing and restocking the First Aid Box with all required items for the assessment and use of all Zikites during emergency and sporting activities. However, Elisha has failed to execute this plan in any way. Although it is known that there is a First Aid Box at the disposal of his office, there has not been any accessibility of Zikites to the box in times of emergencies which has left Zikites with no choice but to queue at the University Health Service even at the minimum need that the First Aid Box should provide. Although there is a First Aid Box at the disposal of the Health Minister, how efficient it is which differentiates it from a cosmetics box remains a question. Also, the Health Minister has failed to deliver on the second part of the plan where he promised the availability of a First Aid Box during sporting activities. Since the inception of his administration in the Health Ministry of the Hall, the First Aid Box has not been made available at the Hall's football pitch, Maracana Stadium, including during the Barr. Rotimi Alli Interfloor Football Competition, the highly rated football competition in the hall. There has not been the availability of both the Health Minister and the First Aid Box during all the matches. It is evident that Elisha has failed in executing his first major plan as it was promised in his manifesto.

Promoting Mental Health 

Elisha made a promise to plan for the promotion of the mental health of all Zikites in two parts. (i) by partnering with the Asido Foundation to educate Zikites on their mental well-being. (ii) encouraging Zikites to prioritize their mental health and to get help when necessary by promoting awareness and resources like info-graphics on social media and through other communication channels. In assessing these plans, the first part was meant to be a program in partnership with a specified organization. This facade is like a realistic plan as Elisha promised, although there was a presence of the Asido Foundation during the Freshers orientation program, it can not be short changed for the actual program he promised to all Zikites. Therefore, the inability to organise such a program till these concluding weeks of his administration mean another failure. The second part which is also practicable at the initial stage of probation when he promised it as a plan also did not go beyond the pages of the papers called manifesto. These two plans have evidently become infeasible and proven another failure on the plans promised by Elisha. 

Promotion of Good Health 

Under the broad plan to promote good health, Elisha made several promises like regular tank washing exercises, ensuring that reading rooms are kept clean, inspecting the hygienic quality of cafeteria and vendors of consumable items, increasing the number of waste bins, and, providing STIs protection for Zikites. As much as the health minister has kept some of his promises by making condoms available to all Zikites at the beginning of the session, the execution of the 'regular' tank washing exercise remains vague. The period during which regular tank washing exercise is done should be at least, once a month but until the time this article is being written, the only tank washing exercise that was widely announced this semester was on the 13th of January, 2024 and the only health-related exercise was the General Hall Sanitation that held on the 10th of February, 2024. Although the tank washing exercise has been done a number of times this session, how regular it is remains a question.

Health Education 

The Health Minister also promised in his manifesto to promote health education by organising programs like the Health Education Campaign, Pest Control Talk Show, First Aid Box and CPR Education, and Fitness Education in partnership with different to enlighten Zikites on their health. The inability of Elisha to organise at least one of all these programs has further ascertained his failure in the office. Furthermore, Elisha promised to include Jaja Sensitization for Freshmen on why and how to do their Jaja registration. Having such a plan at his discretion with execution has again intensified his failed administration as the Health Minister. 

Feedback Channel and Report 

Elisha concluded his list of plans in his manifesto with a promise to carry out monthly health reports from his office and also release an online means of gathering feedback concerning his office from Zikites. From the beginning of his administration until these concluding weeks of his time in office when this article is being written, he has not deemed it fit to fulfill any of his plans on feedback and monthly reports. 

General downgrade in Zik Hall's Health Sector 

Diverting away from the plans that Elisha promised to execute if he was elected as the Health Minister which its evaluation has turned out to be a failure and plans that did not transcend beyond the pages of his manifesto, it is equally significant to include the negligence of duties he has exercised whilst in office. Constitutionally, as the Chief Health Officer of the Hall and the Chairman of the Health Committee, he is saddled with the responsibility of attending to the emergency and minor sickness of Zikites. This duty which could be best attended to through procurement and availability of a well-equipped First Aid Box where drugs that treat these minor illnesses like headache, catarrh, stomachache, etc will be made available. However, the reverse is the case, as many times Zikites have been unable to secure ordinary paracetamol from the Health Minister and his cosmetic First Aid Box.

Another absolute negligence of duty that was orchestrated by Elisha in the capacity of the Health Minister was when a stagnant sewage waterlog at the second gate entrance into Zik Hall. Despite how this route is always used by Zikites and Non-Zikites both during the day and night and the dangerous diseases that such a thing can cause, the Health Minister decided to leave the sewage unattended to for more than a week until Gideon Utaka, a freshman in the hall took the neglected responsibility of the Health Minister upon himself by pouring sand into the sewage waterlog to evaporate the sewage and made the route more accessible to all pedestrians. 

DAVEAYO – TALES OF WACK ACCOMPLISHMENT

With these words, Omotosho David Ayomide opened his manifesto for Vice chairman candidacy. And, after eight months, with the tenure of Team Sustainability finally winding down, one can objectively confirm that this is how this is how he has treated his office – flippantly and without any impact whatsoever. According to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall’s constitution, the vice hall chair “shall assist the Hall chairman in the performance of the functions and duties of the office.” It further states that the vice hall chair shall in the absence of all Hall chairman exercise all the functions and powers of the office, and this goes to prove one thing – the hall chair and vice hall chair share an equal amount of responsibility in how woeful and underwhelming the outgoing administration has been.

When we needed him the most…

In his manifesto, Mr. Omotosho David promised to refine, rejuvenate and rebrand the Zik Hall’s supporters club. While this is not a novel initiative as the supporters club is constitutionally supposed to be under his office, he outlined plans on how he intends to go about this “rebranding” in his manifesto in which he claimed that he would work with the IPM to reeducate zikites, both old and new on the core values of Zikism. He also promised to organize more gyrations and events to rekindle the flames of pure Zikism. While these plans are, in the face of present realities, fickle and irrelevant, DaveAyo has successfully disappointed in areas where Zikites did not have much expectations.

Among all the Zikites interviewed for this report, the general consensus is that DaveAyo is not as socially vibrant as one might hope. Technically, one cannot be expected to give one does not have. And to be fair, all these social plans that DaveAyo listed have been executed despite his absence. But then, in his administration of the supporters club, he has been woeful. According to a member of the supporter’s club whose identity is concealed wherein, the supporter’s club has mobilized for gyrations in the hall and in other halls and they have also gone to cheer Zik Hall at events and outings. But DaveAyo has not been really active on their whatsapp group unlike his predecessor.             

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                

 Clothesline: Commendable, but… 

In his manifesto, DaveAyo identified a very annoying issue in Zik hall with the issue of insufficient clothesline and insufficient cloth spreading spaces. While this has contributed in no small way to cloth thievery, some of the previous administrations in the hall have consistently ignored it. DaveAyo on the other hand saw it as a problem worthy of intervention and went on with getting ropes for some of the cloth spreading spaces that otherwise did not have ropes. In his manifesto, he meant this to discourage Zikites from spreading their clothes on the lawn in front of the residential blocks.

However, his plan has not exactly yielded results because Zikites still spread their clothes on the ground as there are still not enough spreading spaces. Rather than creating more clotheslines to cater to the needs of the residents of the Hall like he promised, DaveAyo merely replaced the old ropes with new ropes in places where the ropes were weak.

Tradition Week?

In furtherance of his election campaign, DaveAyo promised to organize a Tradition week 2.0 to toe in the path of his predecessor. According to his manifesto, he intended to merge the traditional week with the Hall’s Diamond Jubilee celebration. The Diamond jubilee has come and gone, and the excitement which the first tradition week had could barely be felt in it. The novel events which the first tradition week had was not seen. It was not even indicated on the anniversary posters and fliers. Maybe that was the entire point of the merging that he proposed. Perhaps DaveAyo added this Tradition week to make his manifesto more voluminous, no one knows. 

Where is Project Aqua?

A focal point in DaveAyo’s campaign which also proved to be an effective tactic was the idea of an Aqua Project. In the plan which he vividly explained in his manifesto, DaveAyo promised in his manifesto that he would facilitate the usage of existing storage tanks in the hall to ensure maximum efficiency. And he promised to do this within the first few weeks of the administration. This idea, if one is not being too critical, is a great idea as most of the tanks in the hall stand empty despite their capacity to effectively serve all the residents of the hall if they are restored to optimal level. However, whether he intends to still do it within the last few weeks of this outgoing administration or not remains to be seen.

 He also promised the maintenance of existing pumping machines and installation of new ones to ensure that no block is left behind. Another great idea, but that’s just what it is, an idea. This is because DaveAyo did not deign to turn these ideas into constructive plans for effective implementation. Whether he actually had the capacity and resources to bring these plans to life is not the concern of this review as he was not coerced to make that promise.

 As at the time of this publication, the water supply condition in Zik hall has taken an all time turn for the worse. Most of the tanks stand empty most of the time, especially the one in front of Block C and the ones at the back of Block A, while the rest have intermittent pumping issues. While it is conceded that there are a lot more technicalities involved in water supply (e.g the Awba dam tanks etc), the fact still remains that DaveAyo did not follow through with his promise.

That is not all. The Team Sustainability of which DaveAyo has been a part for more than seven months now has not been very impressive in their overall vision (which seems to be rather nonexistent) and their spontaneous response to issues affecting the welfare of Zikites in general. From issues on exorbitant charges by vendors in zik hall, to electricity issues, to water issues, and septic spillage, the responses of the hall chair and his vice, DaveAyo to these issues has portrayed the executive as powerless individuals. With time gradually ticking down for their crop of executives, it is hoped that things will still go on as smoothly as possible, for their sakes and for the sake of zik hall as a whole.

Our preparation this year took a rise and it reflected: Speaking Eben

Queen Eizabeth II hall, Lord Tedder hall, and Alexander Brown hall. In that particular order Nnamdi Azikwe Hall sent them packing from JAW WAR ’23 and for the first time, Zikites would have the opportunity to cheer their hall at the final of JAW WAR, the biggest public speaking event in west africa which is to be held at ICC on 27th March, 2024. After a number of attempts which the farthest Nnamdi Azikwe Hall Literary and Debating Society have been in the competition was last edition in the semi finals, they are now in the finals owing to a victory against the Brownites on the 16th of February.

Zikpress: As the president of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall Literary and Debating Society. You must have witnessed a number of attempts by the society to reach the finals, how does it feel to be the first president to achieve this feat.

SpeakingEben: Well, I feel so happy and fulfilled. I have been part of the process since 2019 and I have represented the hall in at least one round every year and seeing Zik hall lose at either the quarters or semis every year bothered me so much!

When I became the president, I changed few structures and became more intentional about plans and actualization and here we are.

Zikpress: It's nice to hear that. What lesson(s) have you personally learnt from leading the society especially through JAW WAR?

SpeakingEben: The popular simple sentence: "Proper preparation prevents poor performance"

I have learnt that those who do well in jaw war every year are those who started preparing early and strategized well..

Zikpress: The semi finals took place on the 16th of February, which would make it exactly a month in a few days even when the date for the finals has not been announced yet. How do you intend to keep the same momentum you started with?

SpeakingEben: God help us!

We have written our speeches, finalized and Internalized but you know, as the President of two associations, I have a lot on my table and I have moved on with other responsibilities. Whenever the date is released, we will appear with the proper momentum and do the best we can.

Zikpress: That's good. What are the plans for the future of the Literary and Debating Society in the hall to retain this winning culture.

SpeakingEben: Well, since positions in the society are solely by appointment, I'll look critically to see who's fit and worthy to carry on the legacy, someone who has been with me all through the process and has witnessed how every single thing was planned out. That person, with proper orientation, will be able to retain the winning culture and take Zik LnD to the highest height possible…

NEWLY ELECTED FASSA PRESIDENT, EMMANUEL ONIYIDE REACTS ON HIS VICTORY.

The newly elected President Faculty of Science, FASSA, Emmanuel Oniyide has come out to give a vote of thanks to his supporters in a reaction to the just concluded faculty election that happened during the week.

The Faculty of Science Student Association held their election on Friday, 22nd of March, 2023, where a Zikite and a student of the department of Anthropology, Emmanuel Oniyide popularly known as Excellency emerged victorious with a whopping 416 votes which constituted about 60% of the students that casted their votes. 

This comes after Oyekanmi Faiz, another Zikite was elected as the president of The Faculty of the social science student association, making it two consecutive wins for Nnamdi Azikwe Hall.

Excellency said he would like to thank God first and then thank FASSAite for voting him in and giving him the chance to lead tem. He said he was the PRO of the FASSA electoral committee last year while simultaneously running for the Post of the vice hall chair in Zik hall.

On the role of ZIK hall in his success, he stated that when he got to know that his opponent was also a Zikite, he told some stakeholders in ZIK hall particularly the hall chairman and from the hall Chairman’s reactions and words he was told that the hall cannot interfere in their election because they are brothers contesting outside ZIK hall and they should face it themselves.

 He noted that the hall didn’t interfere as he expected the ZIK hall IPM to tell people to share posts and campaign flyers but that wasn’t the case, he continued to push on and didn’t stop because he wasn’t getting backing from the hall. However, he stated that before the day of the election some Zikites reached out to him asking how and where they could help him and he thanked God that all their efforts came through.

As to what FASSAites should expect in his administration, he reminded our correspondent that he was a participant of the group that came second runner up at the INNOTECH event that came a day after the election. He said he won yesterday and won again today and he knows there are better days to come like this so he wants FASSAites to expect more excellent things like this to come like his name, EXCELLENCY.

Editorial: Popularity, Personality, Plans Or Political Ideology

As we all know the electoral season is ramping up around every nook and cranny of the university. With a few of the departments, faculties and hall already conducting their electoral process while others just kicked off their own procedure, there is no doubt that election fever is catching up around University of Ibadan with the semester almost entering its end.

The biggest question mark that has always surrounded every electoral process, is the criteria for which to judge each political candidate that is jostling for power, and what is the best way to judge their competence and viability for the post they aspire to occupy.

Like the case in more contemporary times and places such as Britain and America, political candidates are judged based on their political acumen and ideology, with very few situations does the idea of popularity and personality come into play as a viable means of swaying the electoral college or the people as the case may be.

In Nigeria, ideology takes a back seat to popularity and personality with the masses swayed by what they presume to be the personality of an individual and how popular the said individual is viewed among his peers. In some cases, financial capabilities play a bigger role in deciding the fate of elections in the country, as the more you can dole out, the more probability that you will be elected. And this further entrenched the trait of corruption and lack of accountability in our electoral system, as most of these elected officials, when elected, turned their backs on the electorate believing that after all they have paid their dues, through the financial strength they exhibited during the campaign and electoral process in general. Some even believe it is time to recover the financial liquid they expended during the whole electoral process.

This practice is reverberating in all parts of Nigeria and even in the Nigerian institution. Like the case of UI, electoral processes are in most cases not decided by ideologies or plans of the aspiring candidates but rather the popularity and personality of the said candidates. In most cases the electorate are more concerned about the perceived demoneur and qualities an individual exhibits. Some go by the way or manner of approach, greetings and if at all how often does he/she greets you. How modest does the candidate look, does he look worldly or underworldly, does he count himself too big or proud to stoop low in their presence.

In some cases religious and tribal sentiments come into place, as candidates are judged not only on personality but their religious or tribal inclinations. Which fellowship does he or she attend, what tribe or lineage does this candidate originate from. These sentiments and points of view originate from the primary Nigerian sphere of political system which has found a way to creep into other places and institutions around the country with university of Ibadan not being an exception.

It begs the question why a citadel of learning will choose leaders not based on ideology or plans but rather on good behaviours and perceived personality. And this like in most cases have come back to bite the populace in butt, as elected candidates in most cases don't end up possessing what is required to handle the position they have been elected into because in most cases they are elected on the basis of goodwill rather on the strength of their plans and their ability to carry it out. 

A prominent example was the case of Buhari, the former President of Nigeria who was elected not based on his plans but rather on his perceived goodwill, personality and demoneur. This would prove to be a costly mistake that will send the country into a Great economic depression. And it could be argued that the masses did not learn from their mistakes, as the jury is still out on the present administration as things seem to be going from bad to worse. Like the words of great philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel "History teaches us that man learns nothing from history". 

Coming back to UI, and Zikhall in particular, the electoral process has always come down to the perceived popularities and personalities of candidates. It seems like the more popular you are and the more likable you are, there is a big possibility that you will be able to maneuver your way into power. The big question should be what should be of most importance; should your popularity and influence way more than your plans and ability to deliver your promises. We keep complaining about bad administration but yet creating a platform for which such bad leadership could thrive.

It is common knowledge that a person deserves what they get all by the consequences of their choice. If you pick a leader based on personality and popularity, there is no reasonable ground for you to start faulting his plans or his inability to perform to your taste, because in the real sense you only have him or her your mandate not based on the plans they have for you but rather based on your relationship and how familiar you are with the candidate in question. It will only be hypocritical to expect what you didn't bargain for. Because even miracles don't just appear from nowhere, you have to work towards it. 

So it goes without saying, that inasmuch as we prefer and moved towards familiar candidates, we should not just be swayed by their popularity and human qualities and charisma alone we should also gear to familiarize ourselves with their plans and make decisions on viability of this plans and ideology instead of basking ourselves in the darkness of what we think of their Personality and how popular they are.

ZIKCOM LIFTS BAN ON ELECTORAL ACTIVITIES IN THE HALL

The Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall Electoral Commission (ZIKCOM) has lifted the ban on electoral activities in the hall and has also permitted electoral campaigns to begin.

This announcement was made through a special release that was communicated across Zik Hall online platforms on Sunday 24th of March 2024 which was signed by the Chairman of the commission, Commissioner Emmanuel Otumala and the Secretary, Commissioner Bamigboye Isaac. 

"In accordance with Zik Hall Constitution, Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall Electoral Commission  2022/2023 academic session (ZIKCOM '24) hereby announce that the ban on electoral activities has been lifted."

The commission further revealed the campaign guidelines of the election to all prospective aspirants, supporters and the entire Zik Hall community in the special release. 

Zikhall Legislative council Reviews activities of hall's Executives.

The Nnamdi Azikiwe hall legislative council on Sunday, March 24, 2024, convened an impromptu sitting to review the activities of the executive council as the semester comes to an end.

The sitting which was headed by the Speaker, Honourable Samuel Igbaoreto, was convened to review the hall's constitution and also to review the  activities of members of the executive council during the current academic session.

Present at the sitting was the Hall Chairman, Uthman Adeniji and the Vice - hall Chairman, David Omotosho, who gave reviews of their activities as members of the executive council. Uthman Adeniji gave a rundown of his activities, including his dealings with challenges confronting the hall. 

According to David Omotosho, he 'established' the Zik Hall Supporters Club, appointing a Chairman to head the club. Also, he 'established' a water committee to deal with water shortage in the hall. However, other members and the executive council were absent to give a review of their activities.

It was decided at the sitting that a constitutional review committee would be established to review the hall's constitution. This decision was reached when Honourable Samson Adetunji moved a motion that the constitution be amended to allow representation of Alumni block residents in the council. The motion was backed by Honourable Sotomi Daniel and the Speaker assured the house that the committee would be established before the week closes.

Zik Hall Legislative Council to inaugurate a Constitution Review Committee this week.

The legislative council of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall of Residence has resolved to inaugurate a constitutional review committee that will be saddled with the responsibility of reviewing and amending the Zik Hall Constitution. 

This decision was made in the plenary sitting of the council on Sunday 24th of March, 2024, when Hon. Samson Adetunji raised a motion for the review and amendment of the constitution to incorporate the residents of the Alumni Block into the council by creating a representative office for the residents. Hon Sotomi Daniel also supported the motion by making reference to a previous resolution of the council to look into the amendment of the constitution. 

While accenting to the motion, the speaker, Hon. Igbaoreto Samuel assured that the committee will be established before the end of this week. "We are going to establish a constitutional review committee before the end of this week. They might not be able to finish work this session but I believe with the next honorable house, they will be able to conclude the process", he assured. 

He further revealed to Zik Press' correspondent that the method by which the members of the last constitution review committee in 2018 were selected will be consulted and used for the selection and inauguration of the next committee.

AFO PENS APOLOGY LETTER TO ZIKITES

In the aftermath of the controversy that rocked the hall yesterday, putting an end to the second semifinals match of the  interhall between D1 and B4, the main center of the spectacle, Afolabi popularly known as 'Afo' has penned a letter of apology to his assailant, Ifeanyi, the organizers and Nnamdi  community in general.

The letter posted  on all Zikhall group platforms in the early hours of Sunday March 24, 2024, was to address the incident that caused much uproar in the Hall's groups, as many Zikites gave their opinion about the incident which marred the match of the day.

In the letter Afo took full responsibility for his actions. In his words "I am writing this letter to express my deepest apologies for my recent violent conduct at Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall. I understand that my actions were unacceptable and caused distress to both the residents and particularly to Mr. Ifeanyi. I take full responsibility for my behavior."

He continued by stating that "Violence has no place in any community, and I am deeply remorseful for my actions. I recognize the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful environment for everyone residing in the hall."

 "I want to assure you that this incident does not reflect my true character. I am committed to learning from my mistakes and taking the necessary steps to prevent such behavior in the future."

The incident of controversy came about after Afo  was dealt a dangerous tackle from behind by ifeanyi, which forced him to retaliate in an unsportsmanlike manner with a few slaps of his own. This  led to a scuffle which prompted the abandonment of the match in general.

It must be said that Afo, who seldom gets himself involved in any scuffle, acted out of character and his actions should not be cordoned, but his letter of apology serves as a welcome development which serves to strengthen the bond of brotherhood within the hall.

It is a known fact that football is an emotional sport which drives the love of the game. And these emotions can go overboard during the course of a match, so it is very imperative that players are able to control their emotions or better still put their passion in check to avoid leading to friction which does not bode well for the good of the game.

YAMBURGER CALLS OUT FOR DONATIONS TO RENOVATE READING ROOMS

Zikhall Chairman Adeniji Uthman Akanbi, Yamburger, made a public plea on Friday 22nd of March 2024, for financial aid and donations from Zikites and alumnis as he seeks to renovate the hall's reading rooms.

Few weeks to the end of his administration, Yamburger released the public notice seeking financial support for the renovation of the hall's reading rooms.

In his words, "There is a pressing project that requires immediate attention: the renovation of the reading rooms. Unfortunately, the current condition of the reading rooms in Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall is subpar. As advocates of Zikism and academic excellence, it is imperative that we address this issue before the upcoming exams next week."

 "In light of the current economic challenges and the difficulty in securing support from alumni, I have personally decided to donate the sum of #150,000 to kickstart this project. However, I appeal to all Zikites, both alumni and current residents, who are capable and willing to lend their support to make this renovation possible".

He further stated in a chat with Zikpress that the budget goal is #260,000 and call on well meaning Zikites and Alumnis to come to their aid in order to achieve their set objective.

Although this initiative is commendable,the timing raises concerns and also questions the administration's sense of responsibility. Apart from the incessant and recurring power and water issues, the deplorable and condemnable state of the hall's reading rooms is another major challenge that the hall is faced with. 

According to autonomous.com, a modern reading room is one with comfortable seating, good lighting, proper ventilation and one that is free from unnecessary distractions. Unfortunately, the reading rooms available within the hall possess none of the aforementioned qualities as it has fallen from bad,to worse ,and now to almost unusable. 

The reading rooms have been in dire need of renovation for quite some time now, and its deteriorating conditions have made it difficult for residents of the hall to study in the reading room.Occupants of the hall have had to visit neighboring halls of residence just to make use of their reading space.

This might be too late to accomplish, but for an administration that is widely regarded as unresponsive and ineffective, renovating the reading rooms will definitely be something to commend and appreciate. Only time will tell how it all turns out. Hopefully, this renovation is started and concluded quickly so students can make use of the facility ahead of the upcoming examination season.

HEALTHY TIPS TO GET YOU THROUGH THE EXAMINATION PERIOD

Examination starts in a few days, and with the NASU and SSANU strike. One might have to worry about extra things apart from the normal stress that comes with examinations. 

Personally, I have been to Access Bank UI, to charge my phone three times this week alone and that has been the fate of many other students, some having to go to even farther places to have their devices charged. That already eats up a chunk of the time and energy needed to study. However, the exam questions won't understand this so I better find ways to manage myself for maximum productivity. Let's see some ways to navigate through this period.

1. Plan ahead : Seriously Ayo, this is not the time to just flow with whatever comes, planning ahead is key to reducing stress. Create a study schedule that aligns with how best you assimilate and include breaks to rest and recharge. You can put those breaks at times when you get your devices charged if the NASU and SSANU strike still lingers even during the examination. 

2. Get sufficient sleep: It's funny that students give less priority to sleep during examinations because they want to _cover_. However, adequate sleep is essential for cognitive function and memory consolidation. Aim for 6-8 hours of sleep and establish a bedtime routine can really help. What's an exam in UI without TDBs right? While that is not bad. Make sure you do not starve yourself of sleep by having consecutive TDBs, and use TDBs if it actually works for you because you had better sleep on your bed in the hostel if all you want to do as KDL is to sleep. 

3. Use Step Reduction Techniques : Incorporate stress reduction techniques such as deep breathing exercise, meditation etc into your daily routine. As simple as taking deep breaths sound, these techniques help to calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and improve focus.

4. Eat Well: Good food is important and very important at times like this, maintain a healthy diet and kill the urge to eat anything that just comes. Avoid sugary snacks and excessive caffeine so if you have planned to go on one energy drink per night , it is not healthy as they can lead to energy crashes and increased stress level. Fueling your body with nutritious foods will provide sustained energy and support optimal brain function.

5. Seek support: Even James Bond and John Wick would seek help during exam period. Don't hesitate to reach out to friends and family for support during stressful times. Talk about your concern with others and listen to others that reach out too, you need all the emotional support you can get this time. 

Remember that you have to be fine first before you can take the examination. So why lose your good health to prepare for the examination when you can work on the things talked about here. I wish you success in your upcoming papers.

D1 Talisman, Afo, Sparks Brawl After Slapping Opponent Multiple Times During Inter-floor Game

In the early hours of today during a semi-final clash of the ongoing Barr. Rotimi Inter-floor football competition at the Nnamdi Azikwe Hall Maracanã, between D1 and B4, Ifeanyi, a B4 player, ZHPO could gather, had tackled Afo, in what might have been a reckless and rough physical challenge from behind. In retaliation, Afo retorted with multiple slap blows to Ifeanyi's face, which led the encounter devolving into further escalations. 

B4 players and other Ifeanyi's teammates, ZHPO witnessed, were seen trying to defend and retaliate on behalf of their teammate, with Afo further threatening to slap Ifeanyi if he speaks or acts rudely to him. Other D1 players: Babs, Koulibali, J. Kareem joined in, further threatening to 'deal' with the other B4 players.

In an attempt to manage the situation, the referee indicated that the game had been put to a temporary stop. However, B4 players after the violent escalations, walked out of the pitch, indicating that they were quitting while the score-line was 5-1 in favour of the D Blockites as at the time of the tension. 

While there were numerous calls from B4 players and supporters that Afo should tender an apology to them, we, however await actions or measures that will be taken by the necessary quarters to ensure justice is served.

As it stands, the match has been declared "inconclusive" by the hall's sports committee.

Posters, Flyers, Banners and Stickers: Examining The Wave of Defacement of School properties

From UI gate to chapel, straight down to Abadina; from the faculty of arts to Zik and Indy; from Indy Hall to Awo Hall, one thing one can effectively surmise from walking along these axes is the excessiveness of campaign posters and fliers. Different individuals and organizations employ different tactics in advancing their identity and presence in the University of Ibadan community. Prominent among them, is the use of print media (posters, stickers, fliers and banners). In some cases, they do it to invite students to events, training and seminars. In other cases, they do it to advance their businesses.

Despite the fact that digital technology and new media has gained more prominence with the level of reach and effect it has, adverts in print still maintain their relevance in our world, especially in the University of Ibadan. Print media has proven resilient and proven in extending reach and furthering the campaign of advertisers.

The not-so-gray area between freedom and excessiveness 

Ordinarily, it seems students, individuals and organizations in the school have a form of liberty in their promotion and awareness creation campaigns. In certain areas of what could be described as hotspots  of the University(areas where people frequent the most), these posters abound. Hence, a pattern of these movements is observed in the way in which the banners and posters are displayed. Faculties and areas with low population (e.g Faculty  of Veterinary medicine, and Agric) have fewer posters. In the areas described in the introduction, from walkways to dumpsters, to trees and faculty and hostel buildings, nothing is spared. 

Also, as part  of a disconcerted bid to create anticipation for any event or individual, advertisers cluster and clutter all social media pages, websites and channels, not just physical school spaces. These individuals engage in massive awareness creation without thought of what would become of the space they are pasting on or the people they are passing these messages to.

 In real time, there is always no thought or effort whatsoever to restore the school spaces back to its original state on the part of the advertisers. And with time and successive advertising on that space, the space gets defaced to a point of no restoration. Although asking them not to paste posters might sound extreme, the lack of strict protocol to guide this 

Zik Hall as a case study

The ' terror on the field', Baluba kingdom in itself is a very solid point of contact for analyzing the effects of the trend of defacement. All the doors in Zik are covered in stickers, it doesn't matter if it's room, restroom or JCR. The cafeteria itself is in a worse shape. Posters from  yesteryears and posters from the future are displayed everywhere. As a whole, the features that could have accentuated the architectural beauty of the hall have been superseded by the unnecessary posters. Same can also be said of the Katanga Republic. Although different halls have varying levels of defacement which can be said to be directly proportional to the level of political activeness of said halls, however, no hall is totally spared. Zik's is just unhinged.

This election season in particular has seen multiple candidates rise up to contest for different posts within the hall and within the student union. The multiplication of posters have only helped to further mar the appearance of the hall (as Merriam Webster dictionary defines 'deface'). While the window of campaign for political positions has not been officially opened, electorates in the hall now know who is running for which position, through the "awareness creation" that the prospective candidates are allowed to engage in. There is obviously nothing left to hide when a prospective chairmanship aspirant releases a banner and stickers with his name and face on it and a slogan: "CHAIRing the Hall."

Although this cultural "norm" has been observed in other parts of the University, it is pertinent to restate that the subtlety required in passing across these messages in other faculties and halls is non-existent in Zik Hall. Candidates do not wait for the election campaign to be opened, the structure building has already begun. In an interview with a member of the Ethics and Litigation committee, Mosope Clinton, he stated that, "I do not in any form approve of posters pasted on Zik hall property. I have asked aspirants to take down paper posters from the walls. I have torn some myself." This goes to show that candidates who are pasting their posters on hall properties are breaking some sets of rules.

However, due to some technicalities in the interpretation of the constitution, candidates are allowed to spread their banners. In the interim AG's words, "...insofar as they are not defacing Zik hall property I (sic) cannot ask anybody to take their banners down." It is understandable that banners are temporary and easy to remove unlike stickers or posters, but then we would be forgetting that banners displayed everywhere (including residential blocks) do not contribute positively to the hall's aesthetics. It is surprising that this practice is permitted. 

Apart from the shed beside JCR, which is already cluttered with various banners, right from the  Zik bridge entrance, banners are hung on the railings and posters are pasted on the floor. Even school organizations like UI'SU, TLDS, and Tax Club, UI are guilty of this. Moving into the hall (still at the Zik bridge entrance) one can see the walls covered in stickers and banners of all kinds. This is a very solid section of the hall that is being defaced. Although the hall executives do charge some advertisers to hang their banners close to JCR (some other halls also charge for display of banners), some advertisers have very unwisely decided to hang it on Zik bridge instead, where they won't be getting charged. And they do not get sanctioned for this.

Other Parts of the University 

The pattern of defacement, as stated earlier is not the same across all areas of the school. On the whole the outside walls of some faculties and halls of residence are free of things that might deface them. A stroll along the Idia–Tech road axis shows this.

However, while the walls are already defaced in Indy Cafeteria and Love garden, Tedder, it seems like only a matter of time before walls are defaced in these school areas that are currently spared.

UI'SU elections and The Electioneering Process in UI as a whole 

On Sunday, 10th of March, 2024, the Student Union Electoral Commission announced  that the window for campaign and election has been opened. Aspirants are now legally free to campaign. And so, the strongest wave of littering and cluttering with posters and banners begin.

In a WhatsApp chat with the director of Logistics concerning  this issue, he said "...the lifting of ban on electioneering activities for the Student’s Union is important so as to give room for students interested in contesting for both executives and legislative positions in the coming election... It is not appropriate to deface any wall in the University buildings either in the hall of residence or faculty with posters...we call on every aspirant to try as much as possible to campaign without defacing anywhere and conduct themselves in a good manner to avoid issues with any hall or faculty management."

While his words align with the statement released by the SU'EC when the ban on electoral activities was lifted, it seems the electoral committee only has power to admonish. Although it is customary to tell candidates not to litter and that their posters must be taken down 24 hrs before election, this is not really potent enough. It gets rid of the banners and not all of the posters. In some cases, some candidates do not even know how far their posters have gone.

A need for adjustment 

The very first recommendation this reporter would make is a call for the readjustment of campus advertising regulations. Students and organizations should have to follow a process and face heavy sanctions if they let their advertisement deface school property.

Furthermore, it has become important for electoral laws for all student bodies in UI to be reviewed. Although students are not presently denied franchise, their actions in pasting posters and bothering to remove them is now a case of concern. As this is the case, it would be appropriate if student politicians are totally banned from creating any form of awareness physically. All the clustering can be done online.

Hopefully, with these ideas and a few more innovative rules, the University of Ibadan campus environment will have cleanliness and decorum befitting of the premier university.

SATIRE: WHY I WANT TO BE A STUDENT LEADER

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, My name is Unago Cornelius Shege. I know it might come as a surprise to some of you that I’m running for a political position. But, trust me, it’s a surprise to me as well. The idea just came to me yesterday evening when I was discussing with my brothers-in-structure, my comrades. We were celebrating the victory of another one of our friends who also just became a Student Leader when it occurred to me that I have a lot to give to this association. And when I saw the crop of students contesting, I realized that I am even more qualified than they  are. The association has more to gain from my wealth of experience, hence, the reason for my candidacy.

First and foremost, you should know that I’m a Zikite. You see, in Zik hall, we have fully imbibed what it means to be leaders, we have refined the art of structure building and political mobilization. Unlike the bottling company that our neighbors are, we understand what it takes and what to do to win, and that is why I’m here – to win. But I digress.

The main purpose of my coming here today is to solicit for your support in my aspiration for the post of Student Leader of our beloved student association. You see, right from my childhood up to this moment, I’ve always been a man of the people. As in, how can you not like me? From my freshman days up to this moment, I’ve been part of different committees:  financial committee, publicity committee, welfare committee, dinner committee, disciplinary committee among many others. My activeness sets me apart.

Now, to my plans; I literally intend to bring the stars to you. In line with my constitutional duties, I intend to steer and direct our association to a brighter future. You see, this vision requires precision and that’s why I’ve come to the decision that it will be my mission. In the words of famous street philosopher, Laius Wasabius, I have the information that can make our organization fly. What information is it, you ask? You only have to vote for me and find out.

Under my administration, lecturers will be called out to explain why students are failing their courses. Exam scripts will be released to whoever needs them. In fact, students won't write exams again. I know it sounds impossible, but I’m a visionary and I intend to bring back the glory days of Aluta that our forebears fought earnestly for. I intend to resist oppression in every way. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. How, you ask me. And I say to you once again, vote for me and find out. A lot of student concerns that are being ignored will be looked into. I’m not like some people doing this to build their resume. In fact, if you check my resume, there is nothing there—nothing apart from evidence of my selfless service to our association. I’m not even doing this to get room in Zik next session. I have a room in Agbowo. 

What I intend to do is to consolidate and build on what my predecessor has done. He was a real inspiration and motivation while he was in office. I feel having another plan will derail from the glorious mandate he has set before us. What are my predecessor’s tangible accomplishments, you ask. Hehe. You see leadership goes beyond things you can ordinarily see. The thing is, I was there with him throughout his administration. He literally had sleepless nights over our student association. It was through his constant laboring that various organizations have come to partner with our association to sponsor our dinner, hang out among many other things.

Now back to my manifesto, I intend to be as open as possible in my administration of this association. As for the press, I understand that there are those among us who don’t value the honest effort successive student politicians like me put in for the growth of our association. But that’s okay. I understand some people are more concerned  about clout chasing; nothing will ever satisfy them. I understand that they did it to my predecessor and they do it in many other places. However, in my own tenure, it won’t be tolerated. Any pressman caught writing against my administration will be shot. Hehe. I’m just kidding.

Finally, as a student like you, I understand your pains and suffering . I’ve been there and I know it doesn’t look good. I know what needs to be done. But for this, I really need your support.

Investigation: How Sloeman, Zik IPM, Has Been Siphoning The Hall's Funds

The proximity of Zik Hall to other halls- Indy, Awo and Idia makes it a hub for advertisements to promptly reach desired audience.  

From our findings, non-Zikites who paste their banners in the hall pay a sum of, at least, N2000 into the hall's account; payments, which by a virtue of duty, falls under the direct oversee of the hall's Information and Propaganda Minister. 

However, our findings have revealed that Zik Hall's IPM, Aliru Suleiman,  a 300 level student of the Faculty of Law, has been diverting those moneys into his personal account.

RCFUI R2K'24 BANNER

In our investigation, the Redeemed Christian Fellowship, University of Ibadan, for her program, R2K'2024, had on the 2nd of February, 2024, paid a sum of N2000 into the IPM's personal account bearing the name 'Suleiman Aliru Onuche' with a transaction description of 'Banner Zik Hall', proving beyond reasonable doubts that the money was meant for the mounting of the fellowship's banner.

METHODIST CAMPUS FELLOWSHIP'S BANNER

In another reveal, this correspondent further made inquiries into how much another fellowship, 'Methodist Campus Fellowship, University of Ibadan' paid for her banner placed in the Hall, a banner that advertises the program tagged: "STRONG MEN IN THE LORD", a program which held from the 2nd of February to the 3rd of February. 

A call to one of the contacts on the banner, a lady, directed this correspondent to another person who she claims was in charge of the publicity of the program. 

In a phone conversation to this 'person' (a male voice), the man behind the call, who assumed that this correspondent wanted to also purchase a similar service, explained that he paid an amount of N2000 into the account of the IPM, an account which he later forwarded to this correspondent on WhatsApp.

However, the male voice stopped responding after several attempts for several days to get the receipt of the transaction he made to Suleiman's account. After numerous calls, the respondent finally picked, stating that he has refused to divulge further information because he guessed from the nature of the questions that this correspondent had asked, that it could be an attempt into something that could indict Suleiman.  

ZHPO could say vehemently that many other organizations, groups and individuals also paid to paste banners in the hall, and for none of those funds has the IPM remitted any amount into the hall's account. 

As of press time, ZHPO gathered that the IPM is yet to refund any of the proceeds from placement of banners that he siphoned the money into his personal account.  

Yamburger's Poor and Vain Campaign Promises: A Reflection of An Ailing Zik Hall?

The night Yamburger was cheered after he went head-to-head with his opponent during the last manifesto night, the deafening chants of "Yamburger" to unspeakable decibels already gave it away that Adeniji Uthman was going to lead the most vibrant hall in the University of Ibadan for the next academic session.

The next day, Uthman's numbers at the polls proved  he would still have won the elections even if he had raked half the numbers he did. He was the people's man. But for the past nine months, the leadership of the hall have left far too many, if not all, disappointed, mired in discomfort and unimaginable hardship. 

Poor Manifesto That Got Away With

In the frenzy of the moment and with bustling rush of emotions, it is almost scarcer than a unicorn's horns for anybody to introspect on campaign plans and promises of their preferred candidate, especially in the University of Ibadan where, time and time again, elections have been won on popularity. And this was what had it going for Mr. Hall Chairman during the elections.

Yamburger's manifesto lacked any signification to the pressing issues of the hall, for starters. For instance, in his manifesto, neither did Yamburger mention anything that concerns the poor supply of water in the hall nor did he pay attention to the deteriorating state of facilities in the hall that cried for help. His manifesto was more about reviving the tradition. 

For a hall that fielded three executive candidates at the SU level and won by Zikite's massive support. A hall that produced numerous faculties and departmental presidents, it was rather a shocker that all the hall chairman could give importance to conjure up in his manifesto was that Zikites still needed extra lessons on the traditions of Zikism. 

Zikites barely want too much: proper water supply, equal supply of power with other halls, to be able to see football matches in their own hall and other related issues that surround welfare. 

Inexistent Zikism Orientation Committee

To embattle the problem of "declining" tradition, Yamburger promised two things:

1. To set up a Zikism orientation committee that would publish articles once a month and would also conduct a regular checks on Zikites; and 

2. In conjunction with the Hall management, 'return', the hall back to a room allocation that mixes staylites, finalist and freshers in the same room. Emphasis on 'return' rather than 'change,' as promised by the hall chairman. This is because the system that Yamburger planned to utilize in fostering Zikism was not novel, neither was it the first time that it was adopted in the hall. The system was used as recent as the 2018/2019 academic session. 

Of these promises, Yamburger was only able to fulfil the former which does not solely depend on him but on the discretion of the Hall management. The latter, which was mainly his own to execute, till today, only remains what it has always been- a manifesto in a word document. 

Soft Skills Mentorship Program / Ingressive for Good (14G) That Never Came for Good

Yamburger also promised to organize a mentorship program that would train Zikites in other aspects of life beyond academics. He promised to use a direct mentorship system to drive the implementation of these soft and life skills program, where alumni and skilled individuals would aid Zikites in the skills of their choice. According to him, these skilled mentors would provide guidance and support for their mentees. 

In tandem to the above is that he will also, together with a non-governmental organization, 'Ingressive for Good', whom he vouched to have benefited from, organize soft skill training for interested Zikites. But what is the rationale behind this particular promise?

The promise of mentorship on life skills is drabby to start with, as there are numerous organizations both in the hall and in UI generally, willing to help Zikites on various life skills. There is the Zik LnD where public speaking is both being practiced and taught, JCI for leadership, UCJ/ Zik Press for writing and journalism, and lots more. 

Apart from that, there has been no noticeable presence of 14G in Zik Hall. However, while a soft skill empowerment program was organized in first semester, it is not the program the hall chairman promised, being that the attendees of that particular program were charged monetarily. What then is the difference of such from buying a professional course on Coursera or Udemy (where you could even apply for financial aid to offer those courses for free). Therefore, the promise of soft skills in the hall is either a waste of space in Yamburger's manifesto or just another addition to make the content of the manifesto more bulky

Inability To Build An Alumni Network Similar To Indy's 

Yamburger further conveyed in his manifesto that the hall does not have a proper alumni network that incorporates fresh Zik Hall graduates, and he promised to create a platform to have a proper alumni body. A plan which he deems will foster a better funding for developmental projects in the hall. However, the only pointer to whether this has been implemented or not is to check whether there are developmental projects in the hall or otherwise. Therefore, deducing from the absence of any projects in the hall, it would make it correct if it is deemed that this particular plan only still remains mere black inks on a white A4. 

Besides, the need to create a better alumni network is a means to an end, not an end in itself. A cohesive alumni body is only useful in the hall if it serves the purpose of the hall.  Therefore, that does not belong in the body of a manifesto. Once again, the hall chairman did not (we take it for granted that he now does) know fully what a manifesto is, showing again that his manifesto was poorly written. 

A Failed Fundraising Committee

To help Zikites in need, the hall chairman promised to create a fundraising committee. He rationalized the intentionality and feasibility of that promise by acclaiming that he was able to raise funds for two Zikites while he was IPM. However, the ability to raise funds for few persons spontaneously does not denote the feasibility and the executional power of a fundraising committee. While the former can be relatively easy, the former requires a better structure and work rate. It is, however, important to recognize that few Zikites were able to enjoy the bursary program spearheaded by Uthman. But the committee, the according to Yamburger would also be aimed to help Zikites in need of help in terms of health or other challenges.  And in this, the committee, if it exists at all,  has not been up to task. 

Non-Existent Skill-Based Networking System

Uthman also promised to build a networking community where people with various skills would be open to networking. This collaboration, he says, will be in the form of seminars, workshops and panel discussions. This particular plan, if implemented would facilitate collaborative growth, and also create an enabling space for those who are newbies in numerous soft skills. However, as simple as this plan is, there is no such in Zik, at the moment. 

Other Leadership Failures Under Yamburger

Upon all the "failures" and the "non-existents," Yamburger has proven time and time again to be a shadow of everything Zikites who chose him at the polls knew him for. 

Before elections, while still being the IPM of the hall, Uthman was always in the faces of Zikites, showing himself as an approachable person and someone who will always provide solutions to issues Zikites bring to him. But since the beginning of his tenure till this present moment, Uthman has always blamed the "unresponsive" school management for his numerous administrative failures.

The 'unresponsiveness' of the management became so pronounced that it became the topic of the one and only congress that has held in his tenure. While Zikites agreed that a subtle protest would be a viable method to tackle this problem, Uthman promised Zikites that night that pamphlets would be sent to rooms for Zikites to append their signatures to the protest, as a sign of an all-inclusive consent. For a congress held in first semester, no pamphlet was distributed, neither did Zikites get feedbacks from their hall chairman. And the resolutions of the most powerful decision making body in the hall died a natural death.

Apart from the blame game that has been pointed to be a cankerworm in Yamburger's tenure, he has also mastered the art of 'ad hominem' anytime Zikites demand accountability from him. While recently responding on the hall's WhatsApp group, to a Zikite asking why the executives have failed on many fronts, Uthman, rather than owning up to responsibility, embarrassingly advised the man to pick up the form of the hall chairman if he think it's easy. This was a man who many had deemed to be responsive before elections. Ours have mastered Nigerian politics to a fault- beg for votes, but become blind when accountability is demanded.

Recently, Yamburger has gone on a donation campaign to renovate the hall's reading rooms. This move, as smart as it may look, is deceptive. It is just to mask up the numerous failures during this tenure. And that is the case for some reasons. Apart from the fact that it is untimely, in that Yamburger's tenure is almost over, the fact that the poor state of reading rooms did not just appear today makes its timeliness even outrightly poor, and there is no amount of "delay is not denial" that can rescue that. If it is not just to score a cheap political point, then what is?  If the reading room is finally renovated through Zikites' donation, it will not be deemed Uthman's project, rather a collective efforts of Zikites, and it does not take a hall chairman to do that.  

Arts Topples Basic Medical Science On Penalties To Clinch Gold In Inter-Faculty Final

After defeating the Science boys to earn a spot in the final,  Faculty of Arts have defeated Basic Medical Sciences to overthrow the Faculty of the Social Sciences as new Inter-faculty champion.

Basic Medical Sciences have constantly pulled up surprises from the group stages where they qualified in a group where any regular would have written them off. BAMSSA’s four points were enough to qualify them in their group over faculty of Technology. Their surprising run of form continued as they edged past Education by a lone goal in the semi-finals.

In the final match which took place at the University of Ibadan New Stadium, BAMSSA were able to keep AFAS’ talisman, Sellica quiet over both halves. 

The match came alive in the first half when the referee awarded a penalty kick to the Faculty of Arts after a handball by a defender of Basic Medical Sciences with Arts’ captain, Awolowo easily slotting home. 

Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, however, gave a quick response at the death of the first half courtesy a long-range shot goal by BAMSSA’s midfielder, Timi, to reignite his team’s hope.

There were no separating the two, taking the game to a penalty shootout where the faculty of Arts’ boys emphasized themselves as champions of UI for the 2022/2023 session Inter-faculty champions.

   
Also, in the female category, the Faculty of Education females became champions after a resounding 4-0 victory against Faculty of Science.

Trophies were also presented to the overall second runner-up, first runner-up, and winner of the Inter-Faculty Sports Competition which are Faculty of The Social Sciences, Faculty of Renewable Natural Resources and Faculty of Education, respectively.
