Student Stakeholders Challenge Transport Fare Hike, Demand Return to Normal Rates

Student stakeholders from Zik Hall, led by Elemide, confronted commercial motorists at the University of Ibadan’s main gate following reports of a sudden spike in transport fares. The stakeholders engaged the drivers in heated discussions, urging them to revert to the standard fare of ₦150, after complaints surfaced about an increase to ₦400.

The confrontation stemmed from a recent report by UCJ, which highlighted the inflation in transport costs. In response, Elemide and other Zik Hall stakeholders took to the UI car park at the main gate to voice their dissatisfaction, seeking an immediate reduction in the inflated prices.

The motorists, however, denied any wrongdoing, challenging the students to provide evidence of the alleged price hike, including details of the specific vehicles involved.

Zik Hall Stakeholders Demand Aweda Withdraw Resolutions In 24 hours or Resign

Following their emergency meeting, the stakeholders of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall have released an open letter of their resolutions. 

The stakeholders, which comprise of UI'SU executives from Zik, Elders council excos, former UI'SU executives, Speaker of UI  SRC, principal officers of hall legislative council, faculty presidents in Zik and Hall excos.

In their release, they resolved that the agreement between the student union and the school management does not represent the interest of the students.

 The stakeholders then listed their demands:

A. "The immediate withdrawal of the resolutions released earlier this morning signed by the President and the General Secretary, which are in direct contradiction to the decisions and stance made at previous Congresses and during the protest in 24 hours; OR

B. "The resignation of the President of the Union; OR

C. "The impeachment of the President of the Union."

The second resolution is that the members of the SRC, representing Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall constituency should communicate the decisions made to the leadership of the Students' Representative Council. 

"And to note for future situations, that the mandate of the union is to negotiate on behalf of the students and not decide on their behalf," the letter concluded.

In response to the escalating situation on campus, an emergency meeting has been scheduled for selected stakeholders of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall. The meeting aims to address and navigate the current challenges facing the hall community.

The meeting has been convened by Oluwadamilare Fabiyi, the Hall Chairman, who has emphasized the critical nature of the gathering to address the ongoing issues effectively.

All involved parties are expected to be present to contribute to the resolution of the current campus challenges.

Live: UI Students Set to Resume Protests Over Three-Week Break Announcement

In reaction to the University of Ibadan’s recent announcement of a three-week break, students commenced mobilization to resume their protests, which have been ongoing for the past three days.

Following the memorandum issued today by the Office of the Registrar, G.O Saliu has intensified dissatisfaction among students, prompting calls for immediate action.

The university’s directive, requiring all students to leave campus by 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 31, 2024, has faced substantial criticism. Students view the break as an attempt to undermine the momentum of their protests against the recent tuition fee increase.

In response, students are mobilizing to continue their demonstrations until their demands are addressed. The mobilization which abruptly commenced at Zik to Indy Hall has now gotten to females Halls flagging a call for action.

UI Management Orders Students To Vacate Campus

The University management has on Saturday, 31st of August, 2024 ordered all the students to vacate the university campus.

According to an internal memorandum which was signed by the Registrar, G. O Saliu. The decision is following the meeting of University Management and the leadership of the Students Union on Friday, 30th of August, 2024. 

"The Vice chancellor, on behalf of the senate has approved three weeks for the students of University of Ibadan with effect from Saturday, 31st of August, 2024 to 20th of September, 2024.

However, the memo released by the student union on Friday which also mentioned the extension of school fees deadline and the postponement of exams did not mention anything about students vacating the campus premises.
