Breaking: TLDSUI scraps 2nd Leg in First Round Hall Category at JAWWAR.

The Literary and Debating Society, University of Ibadan has scrapped the 2nd Leg for Hall categories at the first round of JAWWAR. This decision was made at the senate meeting held at Kuti Hall JCR on Friday, 27th September 2024.

This was effected after 14 of 22 senators voted in favour of scrapping the second leg. The reasons given includes cost incurred in running the second leg and problem of getting judges among others.

 Although, there were arguments that scrapping the second leg would reduce the amount of first time speakers that get to speak at the competition as hall constituencies get to field first timers at the first leg since there's a second leg for possible come back.

 However, the final decision as voted by the senate stands.

Pictorial: UI Students Flood ITEMS Over School Portal Downtime Amid Deadline

University of Ibadan students swarmed  Information Technology and Media Services (ITEMS) to voice their frustrations over prolonged downtime of the school’s online portal. With the deadline for course registration and payment of school fees looming, many students faced last-minute challenges in completing course registration and payment of fees.

Early morning today, students reported difficulties accessing the portal, leading to mounting anxiety as they rushed to ITEMS to seek assistance. Upon arrival, they were met with a response urging them to continue attempting to log in to the site. “It’s actually frustrating. We’re just trying to meet the deadline, and the portal is down, they should just extend this deadline” a student lamented.

In a bid to find a resolution, several affected students headed to the office of the Dean of Students, Prof. A. Abiona. There, they sought clarity on their options in light of the portal issues. Prof. Abiona advised students to pay their fees through the REMITA payment system and to present proof of payment during exams to ensure they would be allowed to write exams.

This reporter approached for further comment on the potential for extending the registration and payment of fees deadline, however, Prof. Abiona expressed uncertainty. “As of now, I cannot confirm if the deadline will be extended,” he stated.

As the deadline looms, some students remain unable to access their school portal, intensifying the pressure at ITEMS. 

As of press time, the university management has yet to issue any formal memo regarding the downtime or extension of deadline, this has left the affected students worried about their academic standing.

Zik Hall Marks 61st Anniversary, Presents Needs Assessment Report to University Management

Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall marks its 61st anniversary today with a focus on addressing long-standing infrastructural issues.

In a press release, Oluwadamilare Fabiyi, the hall Chairman announced the presentation of a 64-page Needs Assessment report to the university management.

The report, submitted through the Dean of Students' Affairs, Prof. Keye Abiona, who was once a Zikite( resident of the hall), outlined pressing issues affecting the hall’s residents.

The document highlights persistent challenges, including water shortages, inconsistent electricity, and inadequate toilet facilities, among other concerns.

Alongside these issues, the report also offers detailed recommendations for their resolution, with an emphasis on sustainability and long-term maintenance.

While acknowledging the limited time left in the current administration, Fabiyi stressed that the report is a reference document aimed at ensuring continuous progress. 

"This document doesn't mean all these problems will be solved within the few months left in this administration, but it creates a reference that will ensure that these problems are progressively solved within the next few years," he stated.

UI Students Resume Protest After Three Weeks Break

University of Ibadan Students, on 20th of September, organized a peaceful protest against the school fee increment, which has forced Students to soliciting and some arm-begging to settle the hiked school fees.

 

The protest which was earlier announced by student activists, states that what the students crave for is the total reversal of school fees which is the major aim of protest from the start, so as to ensure general accession to Education.

 

“The school management should repent in their ongoing attempt, to suspend three UI Students who fueled a peaceful protest on 29th of May” Aduwo, who heads the protest disclosed in an interview with Crest FM.

 

Additionally, the protest is also to persuade, the federal government to re-think and re-draft his refusal to fund public education. 

UI Students Embark On Another Protest

Students of the University of Ibadan have on Friday, 20th of September, 2024 organized another peaceful protest against the school fee increment.

This is coming after the three week break which was ordered by the school authority.

The protesting students gathered at the  school gate to express their concerns with several media houses reportedly present.

Speaking during the protest Aduwo Ayodele, stated that what the students crave for is the total reversal of school fee, so as to ensure general accession to education.

He also added that the school management should repent in their ongoing attempt, to suspend three UI Students who fueled a peaceful protest on 29th of May.
