The executive council of the University of Ibadan Students' Union has on Thursday, 15th of May, 2025 released a memo announcing the suspension of the scheduled May 17 congress.
According to the release, earlier on Thursday, a group of students visited the Students Union building to engage with members of the Union executive namely the president, the general secretary and the public relations officer and that while these students were received in good faith, the engagement with these students took an aggressive turn and the general secretary of the union sustained an injury on his arm.
"This incident has raised significant concerns about the safety and security of our members and as well, the integrity of the planned congress. While the union is primarily concerned about the interest of our students and fostering dialogue in doing so, we strongly condemn this barbaric acts of harassment, intimidation and violence," the release read in part.
Consequently, the congress has been suspended. "The safety and well-being of all students is our utmost priority and we will not convene a gathering where there is perceived risk of disruption. As a result, we are left with no other decision but to lay the Congress on the table until further notice."
As at the time of this report, the new date for the congress has not been announced.
