In an interview with Zik Press, the chairman of the committee organizing this year's Seals Cup competition, Olowu Daniel promised that new plans will be put in place.
The organisers of the Seals Cup competition had earlier this month released flyers announcing the commencement of team registration.
According to Olowu, the format is going to remain the same. World Cup format with 32 teams for the male category while the female category will have 16 teams.
However, the biggest change in this year's edition is the transfer.
"The reason for the transfer is, the biggest competition in the U.I. system gets conducted. That's where we have the highest participation rate. In fact, the most matches, 16 matches—World Cup format. And it's so unfortunate that some players cannot be on the biggest stage yet. If we keep saying we want to sell ourselves as athletes to get to the outside world, the only way we can do that is by playing with the biggest competition there is and Seals Cup offers that opportunity," he said.
"There are several players that have not been able to play in Seals Cup because of their departments. I do work already with a whole lot of players like that also. And that's what we are trying to do in the transfer. Trying to bring the biggest players, the best players together to play on the grandest stage," he continued.
Olowu also mentioned that a Seals Cup archive will be created in this year's edition. In his words, "We are going to be rolling back the years with some of the matches, some of the videos of the matches that they played 3 years ago and the likes of that."
He also spoke about the issue of funding and the winners of the last edition who were not paid. According to him, this was the issue that his team first attended to. He also further stated that most of the sponsors for the last edition have responded and that these bills have been settled.
