The Muffin Man
Union of Campus Journalists, UI on Friday, 2nd of May, 2025 had a rally to commemorate the world press freedom day and also address the issue of press censorship on campus.
The rally which began around 10am at Obafemi Awolowo hall visited halls of residence on campus before ending at the school's main gate. Members of the union carried placards and directly spoke on the significance of a free press to the society.
The president of the Union of Campus Journalists, Olanshile Ogunrinu, speaking during the rally reiterated the importance of the press to Nigeria's democracy.
In his words, "members of the press should not be victimized or subjected to any form of assault. The freedom of the press is sacrosanct and non-negotiable which will ensure that we all embrace the ideology of free press because without it any society cannot progress. It is unimportant to redeem it in democracy and we can say we are a democratic society without recognizing the freedom of the press."
