The University of Ibadan Students’ Union, under the leadership of President Covenant Odedele, has sent out an update concerning the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the upcoming June 6 school fees deadline.
While maintaining that the government should ideally fund tertiary education without loans, the Union stated that the reality is that thousands of students have already engaged with the NELFUND scheme.
The statement reiterated the union’s promise to defend student welfare regardless of ideological differences.
The Students’ Union then encouraged all indigent and interested students to take advantage of the scheme.
In an official statement dated May 25, 2025, the Union confirmed that over 4,800 students have successfully applied for NELFUND loans through the school portal. Interested students were also urged to complete their applications by May 31 to ensure timely disbursement.
The Union further revealed the establishment of a NELFUND Support Office at the ITEMS Office, NCC Digital Park, where students can lodge complaints and receive support during school hours.
The key resolutions included in the statement are the extension of the June 6 deadline for students awaiting loan disbursement or facing financial difficulties, the reversal of the ₦20,000 late fee previously imposed on defaulters, and the acceleration of the NELFUND refund process for affected students.
The Student Union executives while reiterating their commitment, advised the general student populace to be calm while these issues are being addressed.
"The Union remains committed to effective communication while steadfastly addressing these issues pertaining to student welfare," the statement concluded.
