The University Of Ibadan Students' Union Health Advisory Committee warns the student community about human botfly infestation, noting recent medically confirmed cases of the human botfly removal from students. This was made known in a memo by the University of Ibadan Students' Union circulating on the morning of August 4th, 2025 although dated July 15th, 2025.
The human botfly infestation occurs when the larva of the botfly penetrates human skin. It could be introduced through bites of vector insects, particularly mosquitoes. Students are to watch for symptoms like painful or itchy swelling resembling a boil, a sensation of movement beneath the skin, a small central hole on the swelling (through which the larva breathes), and possible pus or fluid discharge.
Students are also advised to take precautionary measures like using insect repellent regularly, avoiding sleeping outside, maintaining good hygiene, and seeking medical attention immediately if they notice unusual skin swelling.
