The Students' Union Executive Council has formally written to the UI'SRC to request the immediate suspension of the planned Students' Union Congress, which was scheduled to hold on Saturday, 17th May, 2025.
In the letter dated May 15, 2025 made available to the press, the executive stated that "recent concerning events have created a perceived threat to the safety and security of the planned Congress."
"Regrettably, some members of the student body and even the Students Representative Council namely Nice Linus, Hon. Segun representing Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall and Hon. Shalom representing Queen Elizabeth ll Hall and others we couldn't recognise engaged in acts of harassment and obstruction towards the Union leadership," the statement read in part.
According to the executive council these actions have raised "significant concerns" about the potential for disruption and the safety of all participants should the Congress proceed as planned.
The statement also noted that following the Freshers' match between Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall and Mellanby Hall, a violent altercation erupted in front of Mellanby Hall involving residents of both halls and that this resulted in the "regrettable damage of some properties and highlighted the heightened tensions and potential for further unrest within the student body."
The executive council noted that as the body that constitutionally approved the Congress, the Students' Representative Council holds the authority to suspend it but also further noted that "proceeding under current circumstances would be unwise and could potentially jeopardize the well-being of our members and the integrity of the Congress."
"We understand the importance of the Congress and the purpose for which it
was called. However, in light of the perceived threats, we respectfully urge the
Students' Representative Council to exercise its prerogative and suspend the
Congress until such a time when a safe and conducive environment can be
guaranteed for all students," the statement concluded.
