Congress To Proceed As Scheduled, UI'SRC Insists



The University of Ibadan Students Representative Council has ordered that the student union congress scheduled for May 17 proceed has scheduled.

This resolution was reached at an emergency sitting of the council on Friday, 16th of May, 2025. 

The president of the Union, Covenant Odedele was invited to address the council on why the executives decided to suspend a congress called by the UI'SRC. While addressing the council, Covenant restated the security concerns as well as the assault on Student Union executives as reasons for suspending the congress, a decision which drew criticism from members of the council.

After an extended debate, Hon. Oladele Samuel from Alexander Brown hall moved for the congress to continue as scheduled. He also moved that a notice announcing the congress be released 30 minutes after the end of the sitting to create sensitisation.

Hon. Jokomba Quyum from Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall constituency moved that everyone involved in the altercation, Excos, Honourables and ordinary students be referred to the SRC's disciplinary committee.

Five Honourables were selected by the Speaker, Rt Hon. Shoge Quadri to take care of security during the congress which is now scheduled to commence by 10am. The defense ministers of various halls of residence were also suggested to beef up security alongside members of paramilitary group, Man O'War and the school's security unit.

Recall that the Student Union executive council had on Thursday, 15th of May, 2025 released a memo announcing the suspension of the scheduled congress over alleged assault of Student Union executives.
