With barely a few weeks left until Jaw War, Zik Press reached out to the president of Zik Hall Literary and Debating society to understand the kind of heat Zik Hall is bringing to this year's edition of the competition. In this brief chat with Zik Press correspondent, Emmanuel Adebiyi, the LnD president talks about the society's goals for the competition.
Zikpress: Can you introduce yourself?
Olanrewaju Oyedijo: My name is Olanrewaju Oyedijo. I am a final year student of the department of Forest Production and Products and a resident of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall. I serve as the president of both my faculty and hall's Literary and debating societies.
Zikpress: How has it been so far? Serving as president of both your hall and faculty?
Olanrewaju Oyedijo: Well, it has been a lot. Sometimes overwhelming, sometimes interesting. But due to the commitment of the people I work with and the structure that has been put in place, it's quite bearable
Zikpress: Good. So to JAW WAR. In a few weeks, JAW WAR is starting and Zik Hall LnD has had a fairly good record in the past three editions now, winning it once and making it to the Semi finals in the two other occasions. How has preparations been to win the competition this time around?
Olanrewaju Oyedijo: Preparation for something like Jaw war should precede the date the tournament was announced. Hence, we have been preparing since the start of the session. Our in-house training and personal development will at this point come into very good use.
Zikpress: With the preparations, is there a target for Zik Hall in JAW WAR this year?
Olanrewaju Oyedijo: The only target is winning the competition itself. That's it
Zikpress: Okay. Let’s talk about the LnD outside JAW WAR. Seems the average UI students only know the LnD as affiliated to JAW WAR. Can you discuss other things that the LnD does outside JAW WAR.
Olanrewaju Oyedijo: Yes. The LnD goes beyond Jaw war obviously. We have the Literary aspect where we engage in activities like poetry, essay writing, spoken words, and others. Also, the Lnd has different training sessions that seek to enable the members develop the art of public speaking in whatever context they find themselves
Zikpress: This is great to hear. So what do you have to tell other students who would like to be in the LnD both to develop themselves and maybe to speak at JAW WAR as an addition.
Olanrewaju Oyedijo: Keep showing up. One thing with development at this level is that it follows consistency. If you want to be good, you have to keep showing up, irrespective of what you may face.
Zikpress: Finally, do you have any message for Zikites as JAW WAR starts?
Olanrewaju Oyedijo: Well, as always, but more than ever, this is the time for ZIKITES to turn up! We are ready, we trust ZIKITES to be as well.
