The observed unbecoming attitude of Zikites in respect of compliance with the hall’s rules, respect for hall authorities and proper conduct expected of a University student inspired Mr. Seyi, Assistant Supervisor in Zik Hall, to make the above statement.

Mr. Seyi made this statement during a stakeholders’ meeting between the Hall’s management and student leaders including the executive council, principal members of the hall and some floor representatives. In the course of the meeting which was aimed at bridging the communication gap and facilitating a healthy relationship between the management and the student leaders, the appalling attitude of ZIkites towards the hall’s rules were made bare.

The document codifying the code of conduct of occupants in halls of residence within UI was referenced severally in addressing the unbecoming attitude of ZIkites. The document titled, “Ethics Governing Halls of Residence”, captures the regulations of hall occupants and makes provisions on registration, movement of students, guest and visitors, student organizations, electrical appliances and fittings, sanitation and health, use of the hall’s property, personal property and miscellaneous rules. 

The document also contains provisions on the enforcement of the regulations and the punishments attached. Notably, it empowers the hall porters as custodians of the hall’s rules under whose purview it is to draw the attention of students to infringements and mete out sanctions as appropriate.

Berating the despicable attitude of some Zikites, the porters called up cases of misconduct. One of the Assistant Hall Wardens present at the meeting, Dr. Oke, berated the fact that Zikites are even unaware of the hall’s rules not to talk of abiding by them. He recalled an instance where he found a Zikite brushing on the balcony and had to give him a stern stare for some considerable time before the offending Zikite realised his wrongdoing. 

Mr. Seyi also recalled an instance when a Zikite poured water off a balcony upstairs and accidentally drenched a by-passer. The guilty Zikite however remained impenitent and even dared the porters to come at him. Mr. Seyi’s frank view of the situation was a clear displeasure at the level of impunity in law breaking and insouciance displayed by contraveners of the hall’s rules.

Furthermore, some student leaders present at the meeting also corroborated the trend of unruly behaviour. The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Igbaoreto Samuel (Gandoki) mentioned an instance where he tried to correct a Zikite washing on the balcony, a clear contravention of Zik hall’s rules, especially when the Kitchenette is provided for such business. The offending Zikite however refused to comply and remained recalcitrant.

The Sports Minister, Jamiu kareem, who was also present at the meeting mentioned a reprehensible incident where an occupant of B3 constituency defecated in a nylon, tied it up and duly dropped it in a waste bin on the floor. Afterall it is waste and waste is meant for the bin. 

Another instance of contravention was pointed out by the Hall Supervisor, Mr. Durowoju, who condemned the noted indecency of two Zikites, one who thought it sane to be clad in a towel with a brush in his mouth and venture out of the hall in search of water and the other who remained confident in his boxers while going out of ZIk’s gates. It is pertinent to note that under the miscellaneous section of the Ethics Governing Halls of Residence, it is stated that, “dressing must be decent, undue exposure of the body shall not be tolerated.”  

Mr. Durowoju therefore called for the participation of floor representatives in the enforcement of the hall’s rules to achieve adequate compliance.
